Size is a fundamental concept of human understanding. From microscopic cells to telescopic planets, we learn about size from an early age. Size also affects our perception of the world and what we consider reality. The ant crawling through the grass sees us as a gigantic being, while we see it as a tiny insect.
Size plays an important role in our daily lives. We use this knowledge to make decisions without giving it much thought. However, without a basic understanding of size, our lives would be difficult.
Imagine going to buy something as simple as a pair of socks, but when it’s time to make the purchase you have no idea what size you need! Chances are you’d end up with socks that don’t fit. What about that home improvement project you’ve been wanting to do, but can’t figure out what size lumber you need?
Fortunately, most of us have a pretty good understanding of size, even though we take it for granted.
But size points us to a deeper, more profound truth, that often times we overlook. The fact that even though there are an infinite number of sizes in the universe, everything, because of size, is connected.
Consider the atom, one of the smallest components of our reality. Even though these building blocks are invisible to the naked eye, they compose everything around us, including our massive sun. And around this sun spins the earth, upon which the above mentioned human and ant exist. All of which are made of…tiny atoms.
Size helps demonstrate the interconnected nature of our world.
As you go about your day, take a moment and consider all the things much larger, and much smaller than you that are going about their day as well. All within the same reality, however different it may seem. It’s all connected.
